The Fruit of Knowledge is a major chronomantic artifact in the form of a deep purple orb, offered by Sariel; eating it lets the eater travel in time. The Time Bandits consumed it to begin the 5-Year Loop from Constantinople 1055 to Constantinople 1050.

Description
The Time Bandits call it “the purple orb”; older doctrine calls it “the Edenic fruit”. Sariel, a primordial half-serpent, half-angel figure who speaks a primordial tongue with glyphs hovering near the lips, offers it from a raised hand over the Edenic pool, as transmission rather than temptation.
Orthodox Decadian doctrine, that of the biblical Eden, reads the fruit as the threshold of original sin: whoever eats it falls. The chronomantic doctrine of the archive reads it the other way: whoever eats it travels in time; whoever travels remembers; whoever remembers shapes the past. In this reading Sariel is a transmitter, not a villain. The fruit works through Dual Magic.
The 5-year loop
The group received the fruit from Sariel in an Edenic ritual, ate it and began the loop that took them from Constantinople 1055 to 1050. Consequences:
- Olaus Wormius (1050) receives a message from his own future self.
- The companions can prevent the ecclesiastical censorship that, in the original line, motivated their journey.
- The Latin ban of the Necronomicon occurs in 1050, and the companions coincide with it (Necronomicon censorship).
- Two versions of the timeline briefly coexist.
The technical operation is not fully documented. It probably combined the chronal flare, scrolls, spells and astronomical triangulation with Alpha Centauri: faster-than-light travel with a “rebound” in a binary system allowing a jump of four to five years into the past.
Sariel’s transformation
Sariel reappears at the end of the Time Bandits’ cycle transformed into a demonic combat form with wings of crystalline ice, the antagonist in the culminating chamber. In the Plata doctrine, this is a retroactive consequence of the gift: the fruit exacts its price.
