Centurion is a hero of the Never 9-11 chronicle, a psychic powerhouse from a world where Rome never fell, who vanished decades ago fighting Terminus. His statue, his armor and his name still stand for protection in the city, and today the armor and the name are carried by Olimpo.

Origin

He arrived in the City of Liberty as a baby boy inside a capsule, a LifePod. The city adopted him and named him Mark. In his secret identity he taught history at the University of the City of Liberty; publicly he was “the Founding Hugo of the idea of liberty” and a founding member of the Liberty League (though “in Liberty and in Freedom, they are two different leagues”).

He came from a world where Rome expanded globally and never fell. He is associated with the New Rome, and his rival is named August Roman. His psychic power is the yardstick by which the city measures danger.

Appearance and armor

“A blond guy in a blue suit, Superman-style”: blue and yellow are his colors, the same as the Curator Dron’s. He is “the Superman of this world”.

The armor acts on its own: it stops dead by itself, “starts printing something inside”, runs facial recognition with holographic projection, and its defense system fires automatically without the wearer’s command.

The statue

In Centurion Square, beside the triple towers of New York (“here there are no twin towers, there are triplet towers, they call them pyramids”), stands a giant statue of Centurion in the same armor model the current companions wear. It takes the place Mount Rushmore holds in other versions of the world. Another statue of him stands in the City of Liberty. At one point the statue “starts to move”.

He also had experiences in the British Isles, including a scene at Stonehenge and a blow.

Disappearance

He has not been seen for twenty or thirty years. He disappeared fighting Terminus (also recorded as “Tárminos”), who is said to have taken him to the galaxy. Three versions circulate: he died; he was taken to the galaxy; he still patrols the area. While the patrol rumor holds, the city behaves as protected.

Succession

Whoever wears the armor takes the name, and the armor validates its wearer by facial recognition. Olimpo now wears it and carries the name Centurion.

Relationships

  • Daedalus protected things alongside him.
  • Medea took part with him in the Mechaner, “for two different reasons”, never stated.
  • August Roman, his rival, once backed a president who later fell.
  • Terminus is the enemy who removed him.

Open questions

  • Whether New York and the City of Liberty are one city or two.
  • What the Mechaner is, and what “Founding Hugo” means.
  • How much of his power was his own and how much the armor’s.
  • Which world the LifePod came from, and whether it is the world where Rome never fell.
  • What happened in the British Isles beyond Stonehenge, a girl and a blow.
  • How many armors of this model exist, and who makes them.
