Description

The only record of her presence is the phrase «La ves y tiene un caldero al lado» (“You see her and she has a cauldron beside her”). She exists in Torreluces twice, as a figure who is seen and as a story that is told; whether the two are the same has not been established.

She is “a witch and knows about a potion”: her power is potion and enchantment, not strength. Her aunt Hecate taught her magic; Hecate and Aphrodite together “awakened great amorous passions in her”.

History

In the local myth, enchanted by Aphrodite, Medea puts the dragon to sleep and gives the golden fleece to Jason, abandoning her father and killing her brother. When Jason, father of her two “very good” children, marries another, she sends the bride a crown and a poisoned dress and kills her two children. The rule told in Megapolis with her story: love induced by a goddess does not excuse.

Conflicting accounts

  • One voice names Aristóteles as her brother; another says only that she “killed her brother” while fleeing. Whether these are the same man is not established.

Open questions

  • Where and when she can be found, and whether she is alive, an apparition or a figure from a story.
  • The cauldron’s nature, her potion, and her fate after the revenge.
