August Roman is a revived former rival of Centurion, head of the Roman family and owner of the Circus Maximus, a clandestine superhero fighting circuit in the alternate New York of 2035.

Rival of Centurion
Centurion was the Roman hero of long temporal reach who sacrificed himself against Terminus. August, of Latin lineage, came back, carrying his grudge into 2035. He is the dark reverse of what Centurion defended: where Centurion protected, August exploits.
The Circus Maximus
- An underground arena beneath Madison Avenue, in a stretch of the city that seems to revert to the 1930s.
- Entry is as a lanista, the one who presents gladiators. Beings of power fight for a hidden audience; August charges for each fight.
- The Curator Drone, an executioner automaton wearing Centurion’s own colors, guards the show.
The other drug
In the essence-trafficking plot, the family guards “the other drug”, a shipment of the divine substance (ambrosia), but has lost track of where it was left. The circus is a node in the network that distills and traffics the fire of the gods; the corporate power behind it is Mars Inc.
His daughter Saturnalia Roman is the family’s manipulative force.
