The Liberty League is the academy, armed corps and intervention force of people with special abilities on Earth-212. It is the world’s default reference for legitimate superheroes and draws applicants from all over the Earth, while some call it fascist.

Description

In the field the League deploys regular soldiers and a few superheroes in the same formation. Before intervening it demands surrender by megaphone, citing known crimes, and asks for proof.

Academy

  • Ranks include deputies, apprentices and caretes, plus higher training levels.
  • Entry is by the “Liberty League tests”, moral dilemmas of the form “What would you do if…“.
  • Applicants must be “of good family”; a member’s recommendation speeds admission, even into higher levels.
  • A quota for non-human persons, presented as inclusiveness, admitted Gatnik the White Monkey.
  • Requirements are very hard; membership remains rare.

The nano-retina

Members receive an implanted retina with nanobots. It turns a powered individual into organic personnel, with chain of command, entry threshold and traceability, and is the main argument of those who call the League fascist.

Role

One can collaborate with League members without belonging, or leave everything else on Earth and keep only the League. Its name is also linked to conflict on Mars.

Members

  • Dédalo — member of senior rank.
  • Centurion — its leader or its exemplary epitome, depending on the account.
  • Dr. Tomorrow — guardian of time; former member.
  • Adrian Eldritch — mage and lord of arcane arts; former member.
  • Gatnik the White Monkey — non-human person, admitted under the quota.

Open questions

  • Whether Centurion leads the League or is only its model of conduct is not settled.
  • The source of its authority (state, private or supranational) is unknown.
  • Whether soldiers and superheroes share rank, pay or chain of command is not recorded.
  • What the nano-retina does and whether it can be removed is unknown.
  • Whether its Mars involvement is occupation, jurisdiction or open war is unclear.
