Meteora is a name that in Antiterra belongs at once to a woman working under that code name for the Ministry, to a yacht on the Sea of Marmara, and to a set of clocks used to synchronize time travel.

The woman

An investigator of the Ministry, “Meteora” is how the state names her outwardly. She moves between the port, where she meets her companions, and “the Frenchies” (los franchutes), the French secret police, whom the group trusts along with her. She brings papers and information and is told: “we are telling you as a person we trust”. She fights in the front line with Moni, Philip, Merl, Cloth Swan, Sirena, Abi and Iceberg. In the operation of the flare, which passes through her to the group, “Meteora’s hands” join and are placed over the eye. At the port she was seen “angrier and more caracólica than ever”; the word is not explained.

She is expressly distinct from Theodora.

The yacht

“The yacht has it written there and says Meteora”: the name is noted on it, not engraved. Its captain takes her orders, and it is the group’s way out: “we can leave with Meteora”.

The clocks

There are several, among them “the chronal clock of Meteora”. They were given up for lost — “Too bad we lost Meteora’s clocks” / “Not true, you found it on the Beach of Dreams” — until it was recognized the group had them. One clock is set beside another “to see that everything is fine”, and the chronal clock can be dismantled or fitted into the larger time-travel artifact.

Conflicting accounts

  • One record says Meteora tries to take control of the yacht; another has her as a trusted figure who owns or controls a ship. It may be one scene seen two ways, or an attempt by her or against her.

Open questions

  • Whether the three share the name by filiation or by homonymy.
  • How many clocks there are, and what sets the chronal one apart.
  • Her face, the yacht’s build and the clocks’ material are not recorded.
  • Which government the Ministry answers to, and its tie to “the Frenchies”.
