The Black Octopus is a colossal abyssal sea creature of protoplasmic substance with a ring of eight tentacles, which destroyed Meteora’s yacht in the Bosphorus in Uchronic Paris. The companions called it “the Russian octopus”.

History

During a night voyage in the Sea of Marmara it broke the yacht; most sailors drowned or were devoured. It briefly engulfed Claude Nauge, whom Philippe rescued by flying, and possibly swallowed Meteora. It also appears in Constantinople around 1000, “crossing all of Turkey”, so it may exist in several eras or follow the companions through time.

Notes

  • “Russian octopus” possibly ties it to the Russian chants of the Simultaneous Circle.
  • An old map of the war of the chancelleries shows a black-ink octopus labeled with the northern empire’s name, a tentacle in each sea (Black, Marmara, Baltic), embracing Europe and Asia; Arkos sees in it the source of the name.
