Estela’s Magic Shawl is the shawl of the nereid Estela, in two states: the organ of her water powers while she wears it in the uchronic Belle Époque, and afterward a minor relic holding the sea’s memory.

Active state
On Estela’s shoulder the shawl is an organ, not a garment: unfolded, water answers; put away, the faculty stops. Without it Estela is an ordinary model with good hair. It grants:
- control of water and steam, including train boilers and factory engines;
- summoning of lesser and greater water elementals, most memorably one that swept soldiers off the German border locomotive during the Orient Express escape;
- communication with nymphs, lesser krakens and river spirits;
- access to deep waters where a serpentine relative is bound.
For that last reason the Circle of the Serpent tried to capture Estela (forcing her would free the captive) and sent the Succubus (Taurina) specifically after the shawl.
Relic state
After Estela’s retirement the shawl rests on a velvet stand in a private cabinet: long and pale, embroidered in teal-green silk with jellyfish, octopuses, small fish and anemones that ripple in the pattern, tasseled, beside a conch and other small treasures. The embroidery is said to move when no one looks.
As a relic it records rather than transforms: its wearer perceives what the nearby sea remembers. The chronicler advises against wearing it on long voyages. The Time Bandits sometimes take it on sea operations, when it briefly becomes what it was.
Transition
When it changed state is not fixed. The Chronicler of the Plata’s hypothesis: it stayed with Estela until she left the shared arc, after Nice, Meteora’s yacht and her promise to return with higher-ranking nymphs, then remained in the cabinet as pledge or legacy. If she recovers it, it would become an organ again.
