The Holy Sect of the Blind is the secret society that rules the underworld of Buenos Aires, pulling the strings of the world above from below.
| Leader | Norberto Buscaglia |
| Spanish entry | La Secta Sagrada de los Ciegos |
Description
Behind dark glasses they have empty sockets, yet perceive with a clarity that is not sight, move supernaturally fast and know the tunnels under the old city best. They steal sleeping bodies, drug victims with Black Lotus and infiltrate police and charities. Their one-eyed leader, Norberto Buscaglia, summons byakhee with a whistle; when he raises a fog, all are blind but them.
They are the sect of the Informe sobre ciegos (“Report on the Blind”) by Fernando Vidal Olmos, from Sábato’s Sobre héroes y tumbas.
History
1922. The collective vision spread by the rite to Hastur reached them with great clarity (they “saw” Carcosa better than the sighted) and so they located Beatriz Guerrero. Finding her pregnant and isolated from Borges and Xul Solar, they took her asleep from the convent and hid her in a boarding house in Once as “Rosaura”. They seek the Necronomicon that Xul made disappear, the book that opens and closes their doors.
Blindness as initiation. Losing sight is an initiation, not a misfortune. The arc of Cthulhu Buenos Aires closes with the man who read the book in 1922 paying with his eyes and becoming one of them. At the close of the 1966 southern gesta, Borges, now blind and director of the National Library, presides over the library-labyrinth “where the sign and the symbol are”, as the sect’s eldest brother.
