Name
She was the tenth Juliana of the imperial line; Bellatrix means “warrior” in old Archontean. She reigned 354 years before the present by the count of the Decadian. The epithet was earned in the field, not at coronation: she personally led the first three campaigns of the Reconquest, wore full armor, slept in command tents and lost a horse on the coastal crossing between Narsileon and Arcturos. Few monarchs of the Drusus-Juliana-Constans dynasty kept such a martial bearing.
The Reconquest
The war between the Sortians and Theosophists had drained the Empire and forced its withdrawal from Irthuin around ~1775 AEP. Juliana’s strategy ran against the old expansionist doctrine:
- slow and gradual, suited to the smaller legions available;
- exarchates (provinces with autonomous command) in Narsileon and Arcturos, old ports taken as bridgeheads;
- advance inland through pacts with local nobles, some descended from old archons, others barbarian lords taking imperial title for loyalty (“pactos asimétricos pero firmes”, “asymmetric but firm pacts”);
- two years reorganizing the army before crossing;
- renewal of the Pact of Elías on Mount Ennio with the seven chromatic dragons. Dragons reappeared over Irthuin, read by the Church as an active draconic seal.
Chancery papers call it “a triumphant but modest expedition”.
Her successors founded outposts inland from the exarchates. Ritornello, in Burdock Valley, was founded around ~2718 AEP, about seventy-five years after the Reconquest, under the exarch of Narsileon; her name is engraved in its founding charters as the authority legitimizing the expansion.
The Silver Age
By convention the Reconquest opened the Silver Age: revival after the Dark Age (the centuries after the Schism), reopened trade routes between the metropolises and Irthuin, reactivated Decadian worship in the provinces, and an artistic flowering; “Bellatrix” architecture favors massive fortresses with modest defensive lines.
The Basileon lineage
Juliana is the half-sister of Iskander Basileon, Lord Burdock, nominal archon of Burdock Valley. This descent upholds the imperial rank of the Basileon house:
- Lord Burdock is nominal archon by imperial blood; the chancery of Drusus IX addresses him as “cousin of the throne”.
- Lord Argus held the barony of Ritornello as a vassal confirmed by Drusian descent, backed by the Bellatrix line.
- Lady Alexia operates in Gosterwick and Azure Keep with that legitimacy, which would support any claim she made to the archonship.
- Sir Glastum, unofficial castellan, is a lateral kinsman of the throne, though the chancery does not record it in full form.
Memory
- Imperial busts stand in the atria of Narsileon, Arcturos and the capital; replicas show her armed, helmet under her arm. A small bust in Ritornello was destroyed with the town by the dragonfly of Kerbog Khan; an identical replica stands in the main hall of Lord Burdock’s valley residence.
- Reconquest Day, an imperial feast, marks the entry into Irthuin; the valley holds a public dinner and a minor procession.
- The Imperial Church honors her as “faithful servant of the Ten”, an imperial saint never formally canonized.
Heirs
No direct children are named in the official charter, and the throne passed to other lines; the Drusus dynasty returned several reigns later, after Phocion IV and others. Recorded are a daughter, Julia Minor (or Iulia Bellatrix Iunior), who died in infancy; a possible imperial adoption, never fully formalized; and Bellatrix blood scattered among collateral lines.
Conflicting accounts
- Some clandestine Theosophist scholars hold that her draconic renewals included clauses absent from the Orthodoxy, invoking the old Twelve alongside the Ten, making the Reconquest a hidden restoration of the doctrine of the Twelve. The Decadian archive neither confirms nor denies it.
Open questions
- Whether she and Lord Burdock share a father or a mother is not stated.
