History
He reigned in Uruk the Blue “some hundreds of years, three hundred years” ago, one of its founders and last important rulers. He raised its walls; a great conquest is attached to his world-famous name. Of his nature: “part god, it seems he is one-third god”.
Lineage
The living king rules as a “descendant of the blue house of Gilgamesh”; the whole Blue House descends from him. The Queen says she chose to marry that descendant to influence the realm for good.
Cult
His followers are “enemies of the Bull of Heaven”. In the Valley of the Tempest they toppled the Bull’s statue and destroyed the temple of the storm god; the rubble remains. The cult has at least two seats: “one in all, another in the whole city”.
Relationships
- Kidú, his friend, possibly a form of Enkidu: “an interesting homoerotic relationship”.
Conflicting accounts
- On immortality, “some say he achieves it, others say he does not”.
- Others state he “became immortal” and “ascended to divinity”; “here they say he became God”.
- The same tradition says he is “not like a primordial god”: a middle-rank deity, a patron saint.
- Who holds each version is not recorded.
Open questions
- His appearance and cult images are not recorded.
- His divine rank, whether he is still active, and whether cult and Blue House are one institution are unknown.
- Whom he conquered and who ruled after him are not recorded.
- Whether the Valley destructions happened in his lifetime is unknown; they are attributed to his followers, never to him.
