The Riders of the Storm are an ancient brotherhood of Vala that served a storm god; a Rider is “whoever is able to bear the ring” that controls the vanquished dragon.

Nature

This is their only known law: no investiture, no ceremony, and lineage alone is not enough. Their element, from their god, is electricity; their lineage, divine.

The storm god

They served “this fat being of the storms”, called Adad and Talos in Vala, with “other secret names” and others in other worlds. He “is neither evil nor good, though at times he had to do with the attack on humanity”; “there are clouds that can cover everything”. The cult has no recorded living faithful.

The fallen temple

A fallen temple holds “the treasures of the storm riders”. Its dead guardians still preside over magical rituals.

The castle

A separate variety, “the Demonic storm riders”, acts in the events of the castle; whether they are corrupted Riders, a splinter faction or something else is not established.

History

Few and old, figures “of the stature of Gilgamesh”, they date from “more than 100 years ago, more than 1000 years”. Their fall reshaped the world once. “Their descendants” survive, of unknown number and place, able to claim the title only through the ring.

Conflicting accounts

  • One account holds that the temple’s guardians are “giant statues of the god before he fell”.
  • Another holds that they are “the skeletons” of warriors who perished, “sponsoring this encounter”.

Open questions

  • Where the temple, the castle and the descendants are.
  • What the ring demands, and whether descent suffices to try.
  • What the treasures are; how Riders and dragons looked in life.
  • When and why the temple fell, and when the god attacked humanity.
