Description
“Red stick”: the French exile Sieur d’Iberville found here a reddened cypress hung with beast heads, marking the Houma–Bayagoula border. Exiles of 1755 built a neo-Gothic mini Notre Dame. The river platforms are half sunk. Drugs, poison, cotton and spider collectors abound.
Folklore: the witch Kakel Angal, who beheaded her husband for selling their children for rum, and escaped burning. Puppeteer “professors” perform her and broker the black market.
Corruption
- A council whose members kill each other.
- Bishop Thornwell, whose cathedral holds black masses.
- Tax collectors suspected to be doppelgangers.
- Below, the Drow and their spider goddess. Killings of prostitutes and outcasts may incubate spider eggs; a hanged innocent left a chaos-god’s spiral drawn in excrement in his cell, where a mad old woman repeats: “the waters will rise, they will take everything.”
Figures
- Mr. Tory, councilman and beast trafficker, living on a boat hung from a crane, guarded by manticores and Mauríes; his translucent-skinned killer shows incomplete magical transformation.
- Eligos, mage fixer of masked parties.
- Antwerp, spider collector with a stuffed drider.
- Tarquino of The Crook’s House, killed by Doc Hawk wearing a Deep One’s face, revived by those they framed.
- Sarita, unseen drow guardian of the local platform.
