Description
“Doc Hogg”, a surly man, lives in the bayou “with the worst lot in the city”. He struck Erzebeth with a Contagion for one question too many, escaped by enlarging a mosquito to human size among the puppets of the theater that performs Kakel Angal, and held a dagger to the pregnant Antonia’s belly to bargain.
Eligos identified him as a doppelganger: it copies those it kills and always works for someone. Scrying showed him selling people to a figure in the shadows, sexless and speaking perfect Common: four “complete pieces” bound “through the hall of mirrors, where they soften them”; and dismembered prostitutes, the cult’s business.
History
Wearing a Deep One’s face, he cut the throat of the innkeeper Tarquino in The Crook’s House and fled shouting “Deep Ones! Let’s go!”, leaving the band blamed. Tarquino was revived.
Fleeing downriver as a great poisonous toad on a barge pushed by a horse-sized batrachian, he was ambushed: Erzebeth’s lightning struck him, and Antonia, from a willow, blew his head open “like a melon” with two cold-iron shots. His desperation magic cursed the band with the death of the priest, the sin of the first platform. As he fell, the spawn of the Mississippi, Demonia’s first vanguard across the boundary, rose from the water, with doubles replacing each fallen one.
