Description
- A whole expedition gets off at the station platform: tents, donkeys, camels, machinery, a heavy vehicle and a dozen soldiers. A police sergeant with four men receives them, and the village stares as if Martians had landed. There is a single hotel, a lodging of creaking timber.
- Across the river by ferry lies the site: scattered hills, a stretch of Greco-Roman column, and mounds that only a trained eye reads as the remains of dwellings or a temple. A few kilometers away is the city of the heretic pharaoh.
- To the northwest lie the Red Desert and the cliff of Tuna el-Gebel, which hides the Temple of Thoth. Here the green line of silt ends abruptly and the cracked sand begins.
- Gunther Roeder excavates here for the second time. Mohamed is foreman of its workers.
Arrival of the expedition
On the platform the sergeant demands the weapons of Irti, because Egyptians who are not police may not carry them. He yields only when Camille presents Irti as her security service.
