Train to the South is an event of the ldc chronicle (December 20–21, 1928): a provincial local train from Cairo to Ashmunain to which Paul Morand had two or three Orient Express carriages coupled. To make room, the ordinary passengers bound south were left on the ground.

Passengers

  • The Germans with Gunther Roeder, who travels to seal, not to excavate.
  • The Staufenberg brothers and Hans.
  • Morand’s people.
  • Gasparini, hired for the bar car.
  • Three travelers with first-class tickets, officially charged with recovering a dagger they carry on them.

The trip to Ashmunain takes less than a day.

Arrival

Morand does not get off. He continues to Luxor to make Howard Carter an offer that, he says, Carter cannot refuse, and leaves his men in charge. The cargo unloaded includes tents, donkeys, camels, machinery and barred cages with padlocks and chains that nobody can explain.
