The cover expedition
He operates in parallel with, and in rivalry to, the French faction. His camp looks more like a military operation than a dig: twenty guards, vehicles, generators. What betrays its real purpose are the bars, chains and padlocks he unloads to seal the tomb and loot it without witnesses. Irti learns this by sharing dates with the Egyptian workers at their fire: “They are not coming to dig. They are coming to seal.”
His name echoes that of the historical Egyptologist Günther Roeder, who excavated at Hermopolis/Ashmunain.
