The diversion
Victoria Stark keeps her word. Before the birds stir, she blows up the provisions sector, which held alcohol and pyrotechnic material brought for the new year, and the whole camp is thrown into uproar. She also leaves three loaded camels, the vehicle key, a flare pistol and a warning about the tribes of the interior. The information of Mohamed justified the escape.
The three fugitives had already left tunics, barely covered in sand, at a chosen spot. While everyone watches the fire they put them on, and at two hundred meters they are three more Egyptians in the landscape.
The loose end
Gasparini does not watch the fire but sniffs at the scene. He is dealt with from behind, with a single blow.
The flight
They then face quicksand, which Irti reads in time. They release the camels toward the east, so that anyone following will think they went on toward the river. They continue on foot, erasing their tracks, toward the Red Desert.
