Samuel Giles, about forty-two, is the chief executive of the corporation Mars in the alternate New York where the towers never fell. He is an antagonist driven by a near-messianic conviction that divinity must be rooted on Earth.

Role
Giles directs Mars, a corporation whose reach runs from the city’s laboratories to operations on the Moon. From that seat he moves resources, men and science, placing himself above ordinary law.
Vision
He holds that the sacred must not stay suspended in an unreachable sky but descend, take flesh and take root among humans, and he sees himself as the one who will carry out this transplant. In practice it is a theology with a budget: a project to manufacture or summon the divine with corporate means.
His darkest undertakings are ordered under this idea:
- mutagenic drug-bombs that alter flesh;
- exploitation of a meteoric drug fallen from remote worlds;
- operations on the Moon that came close to the disaster of the lunar worm Blanqui. His operatives helped Rave there.
As antagonist
He fights with contracts, laboratories and ships, backed by an unshakable certainty about the destiny he is meant to impose on the world. Stopping him means confronting the idea that moves him.
