The contract

Clara Kling, in white, alone, received them on a floor of strangely empty acrylic offices. The job: enter the caverns, dismantle the insidious plan, clean out the scum the police do not see — not killing for its own sake; ideally they surrender — and bring Rachel Betta to justice. The Foundation would then clean up and “purify the energies some wanted to use for evil”. Robots, if found, were to be deprogrammed; Kendall (“a promising spirit; Broken Flute was his name”) needed his aura cleansed.

Payment: five to ten thousand dollars a head, a fifty-thousand bonus on success, a dignified funeral on death — and more secrets if they did the job. When Pontiac demanded the truth, Clara raised the stakes: “you will show us more of the secrets; you are the probe that leads back to the origin of both evil and good… because you have not yet been used.”

Name

The Ford Foundation was “in some way our predecessor”. Alpha comes from Brave New World, from which the Foundation took “the positive parts”, reading in the top caste the promise that evolution is possible for all.

Alpha and Beta

When Pontiac asked “Where is Beta? Beta has to talk to Alpha”, an emissary in a Phrygian cap answered: “Hail Rigel!” Rigel is beta Orionis. Rachel Betta (Rígel Betta) is the Beta who disputes with Alpha the heart of Gary, its places of iron and ancient power.
