Maryville / Merrillville is a new, refounded suburb south of Gary, across the border line, where only white and wealthy people live. The Archive keeps both spellings: the name sounds one way to some voices and the other way to the rest, and nobody who lived there has returned to report firsthand.

Description

A perfect city, “Truman Show style”, with its own sunset strip. It was made by subtraction: Gary’s white population moved south, saying “we lose in the votes on local decisions; we’re leaving, let’s see what they do without our capital and our support”. They left behind a Black mayor asking for federal help over gang wars.

The companions’ parents live there and are content, drinking cocktails. The Genesis Foundation moved the families of those caught up in the affair there, with varied and well-defended excuses: Gary is a war zone, obvious to some and not to others.

Entrance to the caverns

People are picked up in Maryville. In front of the mall, Alphacoplas, a 1970s Cadillac pulls up. A man in an impeccable suit drives, missing an ear if looked at closely, and the detective leans out from the back seat. From there one descends to the caverns.

The cost

  • Kendall was given a life support there: something strange that would let him exist without breathing, eating or sleeping. The Foundation itself told them it was also tied to a mind-control power; he felt they could control his movement, action and will.
  • By clairvoyance he was seen calm, having a drink with his parents in what looked like a doctor’s office, a pin on his chest reading “Officer of Happiness”.
  • Pontiac, watching the scene, suspected that they put something in the drinks there.
  • An invitation to Maryville (house, school, university) reached Ray on the day he came back from the hospital in pieces. Nobody accepted it, and nobody who was clean was invited.
