The Silver Chains, or Shackles of the Pact, are the central artifact of their cycle, symbol and mechanism of alliance between the Iroquois and the English, the “Tree of Peace” made metal. Three silver links labeled Amistad, Paz, Respeto (“Friendship”, “Peace”, “Respect”) form a single piece.

History

Created and kept by Sequoia, they shifted meaning:

  1. Sacred artifact of alliance.
  2. Once the pacts broke, chains of subjection.
  3. Erotic and magical control, even possession, as at the Battle of the Mill.
  4. A weapon, when Idaho produced them from Idaho’s own body.
  5. Stolen by the Flying Dutchman, recovered on the Moon after a parley, and ceded in peace by its Captain, bound to Cronotravel, at the Boarding of the Dutchman on the Moon.

They also figure in the finding of the coffins.

Open questions

  • Whether every chain, even one of alliance, is in fact subjection.
