StormJay Idaho is a mixed-blood adventurer of the Crown of the North cycle, from the still-unconquered plains “where there are already non-European contacts”. He is blind by a curse, carries silver chains, and his bones have turned to gold.

Lineage

  • Father: a blond, long-haired Englishman, cleric “of a forgotten God whose Indian name meant rot, but who also had something of pleasure, of life and of wine”. He fathered many children. He may have been the English husband of Rebeca; this is not firmly recorded.
  • Mother: a woman of an Indigenous plains tribe. A flying entity appears that “could seem StormJay’s mother”.
  • Siblings: many and scattered; he seeks them out to help them. At least one was killed in an earlier battle by an enemy still active.

Body

  • Blindness: permanent; in place of eyes, “two holes where inner light is projected”. A perpetual faerie fire burns over him and cannot be put out or hidden.
  • Gold bones: under a curse, all his bone mass has become gold. The curse can be reversed; at one point the aim was for him to become “a being of roots and plant matter” again.
  • Chains and rings: he wields silver chains in combat; the company once debated leaving them. A dark chain that turns golden comes from his palm, reaching up to one hundred feet, usable as a weapon. He wears a ring on each hand, one of protection; the other he removes at some point.

He is a full member of the cycle’s adventuring band, and his body is where its curses accumulate.

Open questions

  • Who imposed the gold curse, and whether it is the same curse as the blindness.
  • Whether the hundred-foot chain is his own power or a ring’s or chain’s effect.
  • The names of the father, his God, the fallen brother and his killer.
  • How many chains he carries, their origin, and the second ring’s function. Height, age and clothing are not recorded.
  • Whether the plant form was a former state or a new destiny.
