Borges (the invocation) is a vision in the Malvinas gesta of 1966 in which someone consults Jorge Luis Borges, director of the National Library (then still on Calle México), and receives not an answer but an invocatory formula.

Background

It came atop the lighthouse, after the stone had tasted blood. The text came from Borges’s mouth or from the air of the room.

The text

Yog-Sothoth es la puerta y la llave. El gran Cthulhu es su primo. Iä, Shub-Niggurath. Y en la biblioteca está el signo y el símbolo. (“Yog-Sothoth is the gate and the key. Great Cthulhu is his cousin. Iä, Shub-Niggurath. And in the library are the sign and the symbol.“)

The formula is an Argentinized pastiche of The Dunwich Horror, spoken with a River Plate accent, woven with Borges’s own motifs. It adds a kinship no northern grimoire records: Cthulhu — whose coming the Esoteric Order of Dagon prepares — is Yog-Sothoth’s cousin. It calls on Shub-Niggurath, and among its clauses slips in Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius, the invented world that ended up invading reality, with the promise that the sign and the symbol are in the library.

The librarian

The text names one Miguel Cázares, a vague figure among the shelves.

Cross-gesta echo

Borges crosses thresholds in more than one cycle, always handing over the verbal key or guarding a work whose full reading harms. This appearance combined two of his stories. In the quarantine of the New World, his code-word (the garden of forking paths) shuts down the Master’s node and the internet falls: here it opens, there it shuts.

Aftermath

Operativo Cóndor was the historical vestibule of this descent; the invocation was its last door. Two months later, beneath the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Barracas, an organization that looked to the future kept a chained shoggoth as a generator. Malena died there; the other four crossed to the Dominican Republic through a box.

Open questions

  • Whether Cázares was another librarian, a mask of whoever steers the consultation, or a name for knowing readers is not established.
