Big Bull (also Big Buffalo, or “Jack Bull”) is a Black major of the Buffalo Soldiers of Fort Clark, 10th Cavalry, in 1888 Antiterra, and the guardian of the Taurus platform, later held by Erzebeth.
He deputizes the Deep Ones as dragon hunters; the list includes the Ohio dragon, the white dragon of the north and Oximec. Stormy joins as his emissary. Around him: the great blizzard of ‘88, and Gardiner Green Hubbard founding the National Geographic Society.
He confides to the Deep Ones that he is the second guardian of his platform. Seeking power, he and his men were deceived into killing an angel, a watcher wrongly believed corrupt, who cursed them as it died. He no longer pays tribute in souls and blood and tries to keep the peace, but feels an inner volcano about to erupt.
Defaulting guardians like him and Gorgona are why the system sends auditors. Above all collects the Arctic Witch of the North, whose cold snaps kill children as far as Mexico when tribute fails.
He receives Stormy’s guitar, holds a barbecue in Stormy’s honor, and sends the group to clean up New Orleans: drows, voodoo witches, corrupt magistrates and that platform’s second guardian, a drow named Sarita. His warnings also name a Wes Harrison of the Torres Grises and the frontier statue of the god Terminus, whose fall would bring total war.
