Description

She is about sixty, known as la vieja del Pupe (“Pupe’s old woman”). She is eccentric and a nudist, bathing naked in the cold South Atlantic, and declares herself luista (a supporter of women’s liberation). In the 1940s she was a famous nudist who swam naked and vanished for hours. She is cultured, reads and keeps a library. A widow, she keeps her late husband Alberto’s cameo and lives alone in a house on the beach.

History

The fish-men of the Order, who worship Cthulhu, seized her from the shore and kept her naked in a cell of their dungeon as a hostage, to extract a ransom from the Echegoyen family. Her family assumed she was bathing as usual and raised the alarm late.

The newcomers brought to the islands by Operativo Cóndor found and freed her. She came out in shock but lucid. The Hybrid Son came from the same dungeon. Her arc leaves her safe and sane.

She brought back phrases the fish-men repeated among themselves: “the eye” and “open the eye”, “the silver dawn”, “the north”, and a name, gatanucha. She does not understand them.

Conflicting accounts

  • She is Pupe’s mother in one account; another says mother or mother-in-law.
  • The first name Úrsula is given only after her release; other records call her only “Grandmother Echegoyen” or “Pupe’s old woman”.
