Lament of the Faithless is a sword engraved with the names of those who died without believing in what killed them. It killed Odin in a thwarted Ragnarok and is now held by the Horseman of War.

Description

A long blade, its edge stained with rust and old blood. The side engraving is a tight column of names in ever smaller letters, running until the steel runs out. It opens with the phrase attributed to Arnaud Amalric at Béziers in July 1209, “Caedite eos. Novit enim Dominus qui sunt eius” (“Kill them all. God will know his own”), Cathars and Christians alike; the rest are later deaths.

It has no known forge or smith, and reappears whenever a believer kills an unbeliever because “God will know”. The archive of the Plata suspects that every sword with that function is this sword, a necessarily plural object.

History

  • Thwarted Ragnarok. Corvino’s vision, recorded in Uchronic Paris, traced it to the killing of Odin in a Ragnarok the Vanir betrayed before its close; Odin fell as an unbeliever of the new era.
  • Uchronic Paris. The Horseman of War received it in exchange for the Sucronic Flare. Corvino holds it is never handed over without cause; the exchange closes a circle whose number the archive does not fix.
  • It reappears on the margins of the Templars.
