With the beasts of the pit upon them, Camille stood on both pans at once, one foot on each, to keep the scales balanced. Teddy threw his quill onto the other pan and weighed himself against it, as the Egyptian dead are weighed against the feather of truth.

In his negative confession his heart asked a single question: how many? Teddy answered one. In the city of the pharaoh who wanted a single god, that answer was accepted — and it was also true in another sense, for the journalist had lied exactly once, the night he saved the three.

The crocodile holding him turned to bronze; the Devourers froze. The prophecy was fulfilled: when the bag of writing ink burst, the quill floated in black water mixed with blood — the daggers dipped in ink and the quills in blood.
