Ammit, or the Devourers, are the biomechanical guardians of the pit in the Temple of Thoth: at least six hybrids of hippopotamus, lion and crocodile that are mechanisms of the Scales of Judgment.

Scaled and dark-maned, they are part bronze and stone, with ibis-eye marks on their flanks and chains on their limbs; they had not eaten for five hundred years. Camille named them Ammit, devourer of souls. The largest, a five-meter albino crocodile with red eyes, shattered Irti’s leg and died with a crowbar in its brain. When the scales balanced, the Ammit froze and became bronze statues again: the combat was real, its purpose ritual.
