Francisco de Cominges is a Captain Lieutenant General in the service of Cardinal Mazarin in Paris during the Fronde. He executes orders that admit no intermediaries, within an apparatus of power that prefers discretion to displays of force. When the Cardinal’s government needs something done quietly, Cominges appears.

Name

His name is sometimes distorted in oral testimonies of the Faubourg (“Comanche” in some confused dispatches). Those who deal with him in person do not confuse him: his rank, his way of interrogating and his presence at decisive moments of the crisis identify him. One testimony calls him “Juan”; whether this is a scribe’s error, confusion with a brother or an operational name is not recorded.

Role

He serves an unpopular power knowingly and is not troubled by it.
