Holy Monday of 1648 falls on 5 April, in the days before the great agitation of the Fronda. Paris holds its breath between the Holy Week services and the first rumors of parliamentary resistance.
Processions of penitents go around the Ile de la Cité, while in the Palais-Royal the counselors of the cardinal (Cardinal Mazarin’s shadow weighs on the religious feasts) weigh decrees that will light the fuse of the Fronda.
It is a threshold date. The city appears collectively devout, but the circles in the atrium of Notre-Dame and the sacristies of the Quartier Saint-Germain are also places of conspiracy. The Cour des Miracles keeps no fast and celebrates in its own way.
