Detection

The raven of the absent Abbot, a messenger bird, trembled at his approach and sensed “a pit of evil”, a knight of darkness. Ravens of the church detect not by sight but through a bodily reaction of the bird; trembling of this kind tells the receiving priest that a cosmological evil, not a chance bandit, is coming. Neither the raven nor Vicar Otar saw him.

History

He approached the Sapphire Company’s fort, near the road between Helix and the north, and cast a fireball that blew away its rear half. The strongest military company in the area did not survive the first assault. He did not enter to loot. He then summoned or released the skeletal hordes, “hundreds, thousands”, that advanced across the region toward Helix. The recorded sequence is fireball, hordes, siege.

During the siege he made a major pact, bringing hosts of undead, made “for money, for whatever”.

He never entered the village. The consecrated precinct of the Church of Helix repelled the great undead and the village held; the knight did not approach it, probably because the altar works with a two-sided instrument, divine and demonic. When those pacted to the demon Quasi entered the precinct and were neutralized by the synchronized liturgy of Vicar Otar and Mortan, he did not come to their aid, nor did he react to the altar’s execution of Silas.

Open questions

  • Whether the hordes were summoned beforehand or emerged from the Barrowmaze after the assault.
  • What he pacted, with whom and for what. Three non-exclusive hypotheses are held:
    1. a side operation of Caladan, Dark Lord of Valakhan, from his Castle of the Panther to the north, which would extend the Mist domain south and the triangulation of Ardis Vala to Helix;
    2. a new, autonomous antagonist outside the Borg-Caldero ↔ Ardis Vala poles, a fourth dark vertex beside Caladan, Nerub Null and the Pope;
    3. an avatar of a known pole, possibly tied to the Ante-Inferno or a black form of the Decadian, acting by delegation.
  • Whether he expected the church to fall.
  • How he would approach the Seekers of Ardis Vala, who head for Helix unaware of him.
