Argulis is the lord of the gate of the skeletal castle, guarding the Castle of Bones that grows in the north of Caladan’s valley, its bone patrols following a death knight. The Archive never fixed his name: the oracular head shouted “Bargulis”, other voices said Margulis, and the latest mentions say Argulis; only the title never varies.

History

Behind a secret door in the barrows lay a four-armed skeleton on a stone bed, in a black shroud (shrouds are usually white), holding a gold box in its side hands. Opened, its star turned toward the company like a compass. At his name the shroud sewed black flesh and armor onto the bones; burned and shot, he laughed and vanished. Each arm dropped a sealed scroll; the fire-sealed one reeked of burned flesh; its runes need the dark-silver collar. The oracular head: they had “drawn the attention of Margulis”. The compass, his mark, kept pointing at them.

A fireball or similar blew apart half the fort of the Sapphire Company, the area’s strongest; thousands of dead overran the farms. The small demon of pacts held him up as a lure: riders and brutal followers who fight down to the last living bone. The company kept scrolls and compass until the marked became Los Condenados (“the Condemned”).

The barrows also held a shadow of the black gauntlet that drove the crypt guardians, wielding a blackened greatsword reversed, trailing ash. Its cut left Mortan wounds his god could not heal. Dispelled by a mace, it said: “I’m already inside.”

Open questions

  • Whether the shadow and Argulis are one is unknown.
  • He may be Helix’s Knight of Darkness, who commands skeletons and burned the fort; the identities are not merged.
