Astra y Monstra is a doctrinal framework of the archive: the sky as a board of stars (astra) and sign-monsters (monstra), with a militia between them.

Doctrine

  • The opifex, the maker, carves the allegories; the astral police — Astral Agents, clearly daimonic — curb what is predicted to be terrible. “Maybe you’re a cop, an Astral Agent, ready to end or remodel allegories.” The Knight or Maiden of the Apocalypse rides on that edge.
  • Its chief tenet: “God must be killed. And that is only the beginning.”
  • The first monstrum was Tiamat, with her mushushu and her retinue of sign-monster-platforms, tying the doctrine to the zodiacal architecture of the Platforms.

The candelabrum and the archons

Instead of seven churches, the Menorah bears the seven planets as seven functions: Moon, protection; Mercury, speech and understanding; Venus, seduction and matter; Sun, organizing and radiating; Mars, attack and initiative; Jupiter, command; Saturn, destruction and alchemy. This combines with the seven Gnostic archons who guard the spheres and the exit from this largely infernal world — with the Manichaean amendment that sun and moon are good, their places taken by the head and tail of the constellation of the Dragon.

It also keeps the monomoirai (three hundred sixty), iatromathematics (healing with the plants, minerals and animals of the sign), the four humors, and the church-cities to be redeemed (Ephesus, whose first love has fallen; Smyrna, the angel of the prison: “endure ten days in the shade and you will not suffer the second death”).
