The Artifact, also called the Gear, is a crucial control element of the Multiuniverse, created by Graz’zt.

History
- It was the part of the primary’s universal machinery most affected by the intrusion of duality, and it was stolen in the attack on Mechanus.
- Graz’zt took it to the Abyss and forged a model of the outer planes: a cake of stone and metal with elvish runes and a sharp central needle of metal.
Properties
- Activation requires pricking oneself on the needle and letting blood run.
- Its minor powers can then be used or, at greater risk, the dual magic enclosed in it, which can effect changes in the cosmic order through consubstantiation with the universal machinery.
Names
Both names are in use. At the start of the shared cosmos the characters do not know that the Artifact is the Gear; the object first appears as a mysterious “Artifact” and is later revealed as a piece of the machinery of Mechanus.
