Oblivion is a great darkness of the Invisible Cities — creature, power and substance at once — capable of bringing about the end of things. It lies imprisoned beneath the Pleroma, inside the mothership, sealed under the Castle of the Prism. It is called a manifestation of the War of the Shadows.

Description
It has no fixed form. Witnesses describe a terrible black cloud, charged like storm nimbus, with “the infinite opening up” at its center. One witness called it oscuridad calopante, a damaged word, perhaps for fulminante (“fulminating”). It is black, and it consumes.
Manifestations
- The Sphere of Oblivion, also called “a kind of Oblivion torpedo,” falls from the sky and devours an entire city. One fell on Zaira and is eating the whole city.
- A double apparition “with two balls”: one of maximum negative energy and one of positive energy. The function of the positive sphere is unexplained.
Containment
The Pleroma acts as the cosmological counterweight to Oblivion, and the Castle of the Prism works “as a kind of plug of light above a black cloud”: light above, darkness below, the castle sealing between them. “They keep it locked up”; who keeps it is not stated.
Weakness
“They are susceptible to creation; they hate everything creative.” Creativity affects it and also enrages it.
History
Oblivion was once the ally of a company before becoming its enemy: “There is nothing worse than an ally who later becomes an enemy.”
Conflicting accounts
- One account treats it as singular: “a terrible creature of darkness called Oblivion,” a single imprisoned mass.
- Another speaks in the plural: “they are true machines of destruction,” “they are the ones who moved the Mongol hordes.”
Open questions
- Whether the falling spheres are fragments of the imprisoned mass, its offspring, or independent entities of the same kind.
- Whether creativity can be used against it; how it was imprisoned, by whom, and what if the plug gave way.
- When the alliance with the company existed and what broke it.
- Whether what it consumes, including Zaira, can be recovered.
