History

At the foot of the first-level stairs, past the hall of the five dragon-headed culverins, stood a frightened woman: fair, golden-curled, very beautiful, barely clothed, with a gold bracelet with inscriptions and small set gems and a glittering belt. “I’m a prisoner here. Free me! Save me!”

It was a spell. Several fell under it and went to embrace her, Mr. Wolf among them. One who resisted broke half her jaw with an energized blow; the detective tried to negotiate. A strange scented mist enveloped those she embraced, and she faded into purple mist taking three: Pontiac, Kendall and Sasha. She would not take Mr. Wolf, who cried “Nooo!” — he knew where they were going.

Nature

At the moment of the embrace, one of those who resisted saw her arms take the shape of tentacles: La Dorada is the beautiful mask the tentacled thing of the pits wears to fish. Her sisters lower down no longer pretended — spider legs at their flanks, gold belts, metallic webs, an altar with a bowl and a knife. The web of Aunt Nancy beneath the Tower works like spiders: not pursuit, but beauty and waiting.
