Kroplatz’s Chest is a lacquered chest kept by one of the counselors of the caravan of the Khan, holding scrapings of the Chalice of God: a dust that grants one wish per invisible city.

Description

Kroplatz, the white-haired archivist with spectacles “of Sigil”, first carries it; later the Blue Woman, the mercantile counselor, brings it forward at a tea ceremony. The emissaries open it themselves, take out a small cup of dust and wish.

The dust is scrapings of the Chalice of God, the cup of the thousand wishes where the things of true heroes are fulfilled: the chalice Christ allowed Luca to grasp when returning his hand, bound to the Gem of Creation. Cup or gem ended among the treasures of the Khan or his father.

Use

Each city is redeemed by spending one mote: one cup, one wish. A fulfilled wish (recovering a memory, freeing a people from the veil of shadow) returns the city to visibility. So far it has been used twice.

  • Diomirra, Isidora, Dorotea: used city by city (a ruby fragment, the red wish gem). In Dorotea the first camel driver’s wish recovers its name.
  • Zaira: the last mote is spent not to redeem but to save the group from the Marilith and the Silkworm, as the ship escapes in reverse.

The chest travels with the caravan, by ship or the slow road, carried by the mustached Turkish counselor. Its count of cups is the count of cities that can still be saved.
