Description
A white-haired mandarin with “Sigil” glasses, choleric and erudite. He carries the scroll of the invisible cities — Calvino’s text as an in-world document — and guards the chest of creation dust: one wish-mote per city. From Diomirra onward he accompanies the emissaries for at least three cities, reading each city’s keys before the heroes walk its streets.
History
- Against the authoritarian counselors, who advise burning whole cities and sowing explosive lanterns, he always backs the soft way; he never supported Caxatros (“the triple K”), and did not much regret it when an emissary cut him down.
- Half in secret, he gave Dorotea his last gem to redeem her.
- Sisi spent Zaira’s wish-mote from his chest.
- In the final stretch he was revealed as a deva, a white-winged angel with scrolls and hammer, guardian of the triadic balance (“if a demon came in, an angel came in”), who believes in the redemption of demons. Captured by one of Zaira’s domes, he was freed in the final battle (“We shall not fall!”), the chest of dust still aboard.
