The Shackles of Hecate are a spell of imprisonment signed by Priscus Pulker, found on a scroll in the library of the vivisectionist Psalor Ki in Ardis Vala.

Description

The scroll lay among tomes that were solid crystals, unreadable without a reader (Los diecisiete usos de un troll muerto, La primera guerra de los Antiguos contra los trolls, Los principios de la atracción maldita). The spell appears in no book.

It is a prison, not a binding or tangle, named for a goddess: it holds whoever cannot break it for as long as the goddess pleases. The power is called Écate in the scroll and Heka in the theology preached two levels higher: one force with two faces, the first magic that affects everyone and the lady of the Scales who decides who is bound. In this world debt is collected in souls and every deal ends at a balance.

Author

Priscus Pulker is the founder from whom the Priscians take their name. An imperial pamphlet portrays him as a foolish sorcerer who betrayed the emperor’s personal trust: hunchbacked, foul-breathed, morbidly fascinated with death.
