The Styx (Estigia) is one of the four rivers of hell, the river of the forgetful, of those who deny the truth; as a lagoon it fills the fifth circle, before the walls of Dis. It belongs to Baator.

Origin and position
- From the tears of the colossus spring the Acheron, the Styx and the Phlegethon; below, the Cocytus condenses.
- The lagoon occupies the fifth circle, of wraths and furies; the whole third circle must be crossed to descend to it. On its edge stands the tower of Phlegyas; behind the water lies Dis, city of Dis Pater (“remember that it does not open”).
- It also touches the third circle as the mud watched by Cerberus, which drags back the glutton who nearly reached the far bank.
Function
- Its water is a procedure: whoever knows the forbidden has it erased there. Graz’zt lost the knowledge of dual magic he had written himself.
- At its shore Coyote was made to kneel (“this is how I want to make a demon”), nailed down, and stripped of all his residue.
- One branch is crossed by the barge of the Acheron; up it travels the flying city Ur-Draxa toward the domain of Death. Its current runs under Lake Zaira, by which Geryon carried Coyote off (“took one who was worth three”).
