Drusus V is an Archontean Emperor (Basileus) of the fifth dynastic line who opened the Order of Thoth to the imperial apparatus. He reigned several generations before the present cycle (dated 2993 AEP); the Seekers meet him as a doctrinal figure, not a living one.

The opening of the Order of Thoth

Before Drusus V, the priesthood of Thoth, the heron-headed Custodes Oculis Solis, worked with relative autonomy from the throne. Drusus V made the Order depend directly on the imperial apparatus: the Custodes became a church body integrated into the throne, and the scribal archive became the imperial archive. This consolidated the Imperial Church.

The reform had two effects:

  1. Centralization: Thoth’s scribes fed the imperial archive, and the Empire’s memory became continuous.
  2. Loss of priestly autonomy: the Custodes lost independent rank, and the Mithraic doctrine of the oath absorbed the Thothic scribal doctrine.

The later Sortians read the reform as a warning: what opens to the throne loses what priestly doctrine kept. The Theosophists are allied with the post-reform apparatus.

Drusus IX

Drusus IX “the Pale”, emperor of the present cycle, inherits the name and sustains the Order as an assimilated body: Drusus V had power of reform, Drusus IX has power of continuity. The Empire presumes that Drusus IX will open no new orders.

Monuments of Mount Ennio

Mount Ennio, seat of dynastic renewal, keeps monuments attributed to his period: steles, reliefs of the ritual opening of the Order, and inscriptions still only partly translated. The imperial apparatus visits it to legitimize continuity; Drusus IX made a pilgrimage there at his enthronement.
