Heart of Lead is an alchemical operation in which a heart of flesh passes through calcination, purification and fixation, the three conversions of metal, and re-emerges as the operator’s own cipher. Motto: “Plumbum in Argentum, Argentum in Aurum, Cor meum in Lumen.”

Its plate shows three flasks: a black lead heart (NIGREDO), a cold silver heart (ALBEDO), a hot gold heart (CITRINITAS), under the ribbon TRIA CONVERSIO · VNVS COR.

The doctrine goes back to Hermes Trismegistus. An old notebook gives “a heart of gold to purify the iron god”; the full formula is in the Akashic Records. A gloss attributed to Paulus: attempt less and nothing transmutes; attempt more and one does not survive.

In the New World cycle, an operation in caves beneath Gary, Indiana, under Lake Michigan, was interrupted by three apprentices with a flashlight and a rifle, Ray among them. The lead stayed lead, and the operator’s heart was found turned to lead.
