The Akashic Library is the upper plane, above the city of Platonic New York and above time, where everything that happens in the world is written. It is not a building but a condition of the cosmos: the total archive of events.

Whoever first reaches it sees fish swimming in an Escher kaleidoscope: galleries rising toward their own descent, floors that are ceilings, pale shoals swimming through the corridors. No written surface is legible.

It was born from the blow of the Anvil of Time. When the original hammer struck the anvil, the sound split reality into two planes: the Akashic Library above, the plane of ideas below.

The guardians of time, such as the late Metropolis, consulted it to keep history in its course. Some travelers, such as Akasha, whose name invokes it, dwell in it. Reading it shows what was and what will be at once: postcognition and precognition in one glance. Lotario, the soul-line of the main ATEM trunk, reads the records, and Akasha’s shadow answers to that name.
