Balefire is a lantern-city of the Plane of Shadows, lying beside Nightcrawler’s Canyon: the inverted Alexandria, whose black lighthouse mirrors the lighthouse of the balance.

Description
- It is a zone of dead magic, and so a place of safekeeping and of endings.
- The seneschal of shadows, Elaina, hides the children of Maleika here, out of reach of all scrying.
- At the bottom of the gorge that borders it is the only place where the Lady of Shadows can be destroyed.
- Its twin is Isle of Limbs, its dreamlike reflection in the Plane of Dreams.
- Whoever looks at Balefire from afar hears the old formula of the invisible cities: someone telling a story about someone telling a story, and so the city never finishes being.
