Reign
The only son of Milan I and Natalia Keschko, he took the throne on 6 March 1889, aged twelve, under a regency of older men who trained him to command but not to govern, and assumed full power in 1893, at eighteen. Authoritarian by nature, he abolished the Constitution of 1889 and replaced it with a more conservative one, which he kept only briefly.
Marriage
In 1900 A.D.A. he married Draga Lunjewitza, ten years his senior, a widow, lady-in-waiting to Natalia and sterile according to medical reports the opposition exploited. The court judged the match political; ordinary Serbians, a scandal. His unpopularity doubled, and new liberal constitutions came too late to stop it.
Draga’s death and the pact
Draga was murdered. Aleksandar sank into despair: he walked the palace corridors greeting no one, gave orders he later reversed without remembering them, and stopped eating for weeks. A palace servant said: “El rey está hueco” (“The king is hollow”).
In this state he made an informal pact with a group of Time Bandits passing through Belgrade on a side errand: their conditional release in exchange for dismantling the Circle of the Serpent, the uchronic network behind Draga’s murder. He offered seventy-five thousand gold coins in advance; the group refused the gold and accepted the pact unpaid. The day of the pact is his last direct appearance.
Legacy
His influence persists in Sarajevo 1914, when his dynastic successor is under threat and the Karađorđević line enters the century’s greatest crisis.
