Description

Alberich is one of the northern Germans, not as short as the dwarves of old legend but of their blood: long-lived, patient, masters of iron and the forge. He bears the name of the guardian of the gold sunk in the river. A warrior-sage, he prays, forges, questions the divine before acting, and has a preternatural intelligence lent by his helm. His one deep flaw is stubbornness.

The helm

His first power item, a minor ring, was reforged into a helm he could never remove. It sharpened his mind and shielded it from intrusion: he heard the githyanki only when he chose, and they never managed to possess him. It also held his will after death: “si yo muero, en el casco queda mi voluntad para siempre, buscando y siguiendo mis órdenes” (“if I die, my will stays in the helm forever, seeking and following my orders”).

History

  • In Florence in 1300, when Dante asked for an escort, Alberich joined the Florentines as their German, alongside Luca de’ Medici.
  • Separated from his companions after a jump, he fell alone into the silver sea, the Astral Plane, graveyard of the gods, where the githyanki received him as an emissary.
  • He made a pact with them and negotiated to be keeper of the Stone of the Apocalypse, the black sphere that holds up the world and that only the pure of heart can carry unconsumed.
  • At the close of Florenzen he was bearer of the stone and lord of Jericho, the first city, which the dragons called Ur-Draxa.
  • He chose to stay in the githyanki astral, with the words “es un buen día para morir” (“it is a good day to die”).
