Names and fall
Those who met him in Italy knew him “under one of his names”. What “should be an angel” “drank from the dark powers to strengthen himself further” and became Daemon, Abadón, Exterminator. As a man, an Englishman, he came to Milan in Visconti’s time (“1200 or so, 1300”), first as a paladin escorting a maiden to a wedding, then as a condottiero.
The Horseman
He held first place among the Horsemen “for a long time, but it is not the first time”; the place rotates. He moves “agile as lightning”, and war comes with him. He has his own army: in the invasion of Italy he led armed troops (“the troops had an army of Suriel”).
His sword is “the element of his constitution”, what he is made of as a Horseman. A Horseman can stop being one: Suriel’s renunciation carries the commitment to take the sword to the summit of Mount Analogue. Until it arrives, the commitment stays open.
Conflicting accounts
- He is called the Exterminating Angel, yet: “He should be an angel and he is corrupted… he is not an angel.”
- Whether the Suriel of the invasion and Jacques of Visconti’s time are of the same campaign or different centuries is not established; one telling mixes in Richard the Lionheart’s era.
Open questions
- Whether his corruption preceded his time as a Horseman is unknown.
- Size, mount, face and the sword’s state are not recorded.
- To whom he renounced, before whom he committed, and who held first place before and after him are unknown.
- What happens if the sword reaches the summit, or does not, is not recorded.
- Whom he invades in Italy, and what his army is made of, are unknown.
