Description

Athletic and attractive, he wears a ring with symbols, his only recorded object and the token of his reputation as “passionate about antiquity”.

Background

He descends on one side from the Dutch of New Amsterdam, on the other from the Lafayette family, France included; an ancestor of his is recognized in the past of Olimpo. He graduated with honors from MIT, a “licensed inventor”. Company and state communicate through him.

Appearances

  • On a golf course he meets Olimpo, a millionaire friend or former friend, in the episode of the compromising photograph; they are friends through money: “you have the current CEO as a friend because of your money matters.”
  • To the Times, 7 December 2030: “Today’s world is too materialistic and needs to believe again in gods that inspire respect.”
  • In 2035, a Letterman-style television show with an audience.

Program

He is credited with the idea of bringing the divinity of men to men, and named as an important figure in the matter of drugs and divine powers. He is the direct superior of Elizabeth Clay.

Conflicting accounts

  • The surname appears as DeGeyers, de Gears, Deschamps, Giles, Shields, Shires and Chávez; DeGeyers is the fixed form. That the “Samuel Chávez” of 2035 television or the “Samuel Giles” of other papers is this man is unconfirmed.
  • Five accounts call him chief executive; one, “current creative director of Mars”.

Open questions

  • The ring’s symbols and their age.
  • What Mars Inc. produces, and which government he advises.
  • The divinity phrase came down damaged; its full sense is unclear.
  • His role with the drugs: maker, financier, consumer or prophet.
  • What the photograph showed, and why Olimpo became a former friend.
