History

Through her marriage the territories were united, so Slovakia and Prague name the same union. She plans no journey to Paris. The queen locked in the tower “is from the local part”: she is imprisoned in the land she contributed to the crown.

She fell from the king’s favor about twenty-eight years ago, “but she is still the queen”: the crown was not taken from her, and in nearly three decades of confinement she has not been deposed.

Relationships

  • Loyalists. Some declare themselves “old-school loyalists” to the trapped queen.
  • Half-nephew. A “half-nephew of the queen”, an oblique and conflictive kinship, is in circulation.

Conflicting accounts

Some identify her with other queens; no testimony links them:

  • Queen Eva, of legendary reputation;
  • Queen Margot, wife of Henry of Navarre and daughter of a Medici, awakened by the one for whom Paris changed;
  • Queen Elizabeth, “the lich queen” of the hundred-year reign. The biographies of Margot and Elizabeth fit poorly with a prisoner of Bratislava; they are treated as possibly distinct queens.

Open questions

  • Her face, age and voice, and the tower’s material, city and guards, are not recorded.
  • Her personal name is not fixed: she is called Queen of Slovakia, Queen of Prague, or simply the queen.
  • Who imprisoned her and for what fault she fell are not recorded.
  • A queen invoked in one fight (“watch the queen, see if they go for the queen”) may be her or another.
